Do All Teslas Come With a Panoramic Sunroof?
All Teslas come with a fixed glass roof, which isn’t the same as a panoramic sunroof. A panoramic sunroof allows the driver to open the top and allow fresh air to enter the cabin. A fixed glass roof can’t be opened. The Tesla Model S used to have a panoramic sunroof as an option, but not anymore.
A glass roof isn’t all that bad. It has significantly better structural integrity than a panoramic one. And it allows you to see the sky, which gives Teslas the trademark open, airy feel.
Tesla canceled the panoramic sunroof for the Model S back in 2018. It was apparently to make shopping for a new Tesla easier, but we all know the truth.
Panoramic sunroofs are difficult to engineer and manufacture. It requires an engine to move the glass. In the case of the Model S, the panoramic roof was enormous and pricey.
So, it was difficult to manufacture it. More importantly, if the panoramic sunroof engine failed while the car was still under warranty, Tesla would have to pay for it.
Fewer moving parts equals a higher profit margin in the long run. It makes a ton of sense from the business standpoint.
So, if you can’t live without a panoramic sunroof on your Tesla, your only option is a used Model S. Adding an aftermarket one isn’t feasible.
Is the Glass Roof Standard on the Model 3?
The glass roof is standard on the Model 3. As a matter of fact, it’s standard on all outgoing Tesla models with no other options available. It seems unusual to have an expensive, gorgeous glass roof on the cheapest Tesla, the Model 3.
It’s the kind of feature you expect to see in a BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S class, or Bentley Continental GT.
It’s almost as if neck-breaking acceleration, high-quality engines, and autonomous driving weren’t enough.
The Model 3’s glass roof makes you feel like you’re riding in a futuristic sci-fi vehicle. No wonder the Model 3 is the 16th best selling car of 2020.
Can You Get a Tesla Without a Glass Roof?
You can get a Tesla without a glass roof only if you buy a used Model S. All new Teslas come exclusively with a glass roof. The Model 3, Model X, and Model Y were never offered with other roof options.
It’s a shame that Tesla doesn’t offer any other roof option anymore. At least you can get a used model S in several different options if you shop around long enough.
An alternative is to cover up the entire glass roof with vinyl. You’ll block most sunlight that way at the cost of not being able to see through the glass. It’ll look almost exactly like a roof on any other car.

Why Do All Tesla Have a Glass Roof?
Only having glass roofs means less equipment, faster production, and a lower cost too. Plus, panoramic sunroofs add to the price if they break when the car is under warranty. Also, they want to stand out from the competition by giving you a more premium experience.
Not everybody agrees with Tesla’s choice. Some prefer solid roofs because the glass roof lets in too much sun. As a result, the AC works harder to keep the cabin cool, and you waste battery.
Others love panoramic sunroofs. There’s nothing like getting a cool breeze in your hair as you ride down the California 1 on a sunny day.
But you can let in the exact amount of air with a sunroof.
However, for Tesla, it was more profitable to only keep the glass roof. It’s a compromise between a sunroof and a solid roof.
All Roof Options Available For Each Tesla Model
While all new Teslas come with a glass roof today, this wasn’t always the case. The Model S started production in June 2012 and got updated in June 2021.
So, it’s seen quite a few changes over the years, roof included.
Here’s a brief rundown of what roofs you can get on used and new Tesla models:

Does the Glass Roof on a Tesla Open?
The glass roof on a Tesla doesn’t open. It’s a fixed glass roof with the functionality of a standard metal roof and the aesthetics of a panoramic sunroof. It’s stronger and safer than a panoramic sunroof because it doesn’t open. Unfortunately, you can’t open it to let air in.
I’m a huge fan of Tesla’s glass roofs. Few cars can match the open feel you get when inside a Tesla. It also aids in noise reduction.
You can see the clouds gliding across the sky, birds flying over you, and rainfall. But snow is the most special. You can observe how it slowly melts away as it makes contact with your glass roof.
The only downside to Tesla’s glass roof is that you can’t open it like a sunroof. Thankfully, you can just open the windows instead.
Is Tesla’s All-Glass Roof Safe?
Tesla’s all-glass roof is exceptionally safe. The Model 3 roof can withstand over 20,000 lbs (9071 kg) of force. Furthermore, the heavy glass roof aids in overall stability. Teslas are some of the safest vehicles on the road despite their glass roofs.
Traditionally, a heavy glass roof was believed to make a car less stable. But it seems that the opposite is true, especially for tall SUVs.
According to the NHTSA, the 2021 Tesla Model X has a rollover risk of 9.30%. To put that into perspective, a similar-sized 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback has a rollover risk of a whopping 16.40%.
Rollovers are a massive concern with SUVs. Quick left-right turns in succession will almost always flip the car over.
It’s good to know that the all-glass roof is extremely strong, even if your Tesla does flip over. It’s way stronger and more durable than a thin piece of metal you see on other cars.
The Model 3 roof is strong enough to hold its own weight five times over.
Can the Tesla Glass Roof Get Too Hot?
The Tesla glass roof won’t get too hot, thanks to its dual-panel design and UV coating. The tinted glass will block out most of the sun without sacrificing the airy interior aesthetics.
Note that the outside panel of a Tesla glass roof may get somewhat warm. It would happen to any surface exposed to the sun, but it doesn’t get hotter than any other car roof.
Even though most of the sunlight is blocked, some of it may be enough to make you feel uncomfortably warm.
If that happens, you can always get a couple of sunshades from Tesla’s official shop. They’ll block even more sunlight.
Does the Tesla Glass Roof Block UV Rays?
The Tesla glass roof does block UV rays. The two glass panels that make up the roof are coated in several layers of protection against sun rays. The tint and UV protection can block nearly all UV and infrared rays.

AGP Glass makes the AGP eGlass that Tesla uses in their cars. They use eGlass for the windshield and glass roof. The glass uses cutting-edge technology that makes it more durable.
Tesla is one of AGP’s most important clients, but it’s not the only one. AGP also produces glass for Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus, and more.
Who Makes the Glass for the Tesla Cybertruck?
Surmet makes the Alon glass for the Tesla Cybertruck. Surmet uses aluminum in its glass, which gives it additional strength and durability. It’s surprising to learn that Tesla didn’t opt for AGP eGlass for the Tesla Cybertruck.
They probably wanted to experiment with more durable, alternative, futuristic solutions. If you ask me, adding aluminum to glass sounds about right.
Why Did the Tesla Cybertruck Glass Break at the Unveiling?
The Tesla Cybertruck glass broke at the unveiling because the door was slammed with a sledgehammer first. Also, the steel ball was thrown at the same window previously. These two events weakened the structural integrity of the glass enough to make it break in the final throw.
At least, this is what Elon Musk wants us to believe. He explained it on Twitter, and it does sound plausible. Microcracks in glass aren’t visible but can compromise the overall integrity of the glass.
How Long Does a Tesla Roof Last?
The Tesla roof glass will last you as long as the car. In fact, it’s one of the most durable parts of the whole vehicle. It’s covered by the basic 4-year / 50,000-mile (±80 467 km) warranty that Tesla offers. However, it’s unlikely that Tesla will replace a broken glass roof.
The Tesla glass roof won’t crack easily. It might happen in a severe car accident or if a large boulder lands on it.
Such things aren’t covered by warranty and will be dismissed as user error or general wear and tear.
Tesla Glass Roof vs. Hail
The Tesla glass roof is extremely strong and durable. Pea-sized hail likely won’t damage the car roof.
However, if the hail is large enough, it can wreck your whole car, not just the glass roof.
Golf ball-sized hail will destroy almost any glass roof, including Teslas. If hail is a common problem in your area, park your car in the garage whenever possible.
Does A Tesla Roof Have Solar Pannels?

Does The Tesla Glass Roof Open?
The Tesla glass roof does not open. Old versions of the Model S have a panoramic glass roof that can open, but all new vehicles come with a glass roof that stays closed at all times.
