4 Reasons the Porsche Taycan Range Is So Low

Porsche is known for its performance and reliability. But what’s happening with its flagship battery electric vehicles? The Porsche Taycan range is so low that it doesn’t seem to be from the same planet as a Lucid or Tesla. Here’s why.

The Porsche Taycan range is so low because the net battery capacity is significantly less than its full state of charge. Also, Porsche Taycans are inefficient and heavier compared to similar electric vehicles. Plus, Porsche voluntarily reports a lower range for its Taycan.

A company voluntarily underclaiming its range when the EPA estimates are slightly higher is odd, though it doesn’t change the fact that the Taycan has a low range. Read on to learn why the Porsche Taycan range is so low.

4 Reasons Why the Porsche Taycan Range Is So Low

To be fair to Porsche, Tesla has reasonably skewed the popular perception of battery electric cars, especially the range. And now there’s a Lucid, and the likes of BMW, GMC, and Mercedes making the Porsche Taycan range look ridiculously low.

However, if you look at many other brands and their electric cars, the range of a Porsche Taycan isn’t so bad. Several brands have similar ranges, including these:

  • Audi (e-Tron)
  • Chevrolet (Bolt)
  • Hyundai (Kona)
  • Jaguar (I-Pace)

You can learn more about different cars and their ranges over at Car and Driver – Longest Range Electric Cars, Ranked

Having said that, most people will compare a Porsche Taycan to a Tesla since it is an expensive electric car. So, here’s why the Porsche Taycan range is so low in comparison.

Any Porsche Taycan Can Use Only 90% of Its Gross Battery Capacity

Porsche Taycan has around 10 variants, but all of them use one of the two available batteries:

  • Performance Battery
  • Performance Battery Plus

The Performance Battery’s gross capacity is 79.2 kWh. The net or usable battery capacity is only 71 kWh. Likewise, the Performance Battery Plus’ gross capacity is 93.4 kWh, but the net or usable charge is 83.7 kWh. So, the maximum net battery capacity is less than or up to 90%.

Bearing that in mind, consider the following EPA ranges for Porsche Taycan models according to Porsche:

  • MY22 Taycan (Performance Battery): 200 miles (322 km)
  • MY22 Taycan (Performance Battery Plus): 225 miles (362 km)
  • MY22 Taycan 4S (Performance Battery): 199 miles (320 km)
  • MY22 Taycan 4S (Performance Battery Plus): 227 miles (365 km)
  • MY22 Taycan Turbo (Performance Battery Plus): 212 miles (341 km)
  • MY22 Taycan Turbo S (Performance Battery Plus): 201 miles (323 km)

Each of these ranges would be up to 10% more if a Porsche Taycan could use more of its gross battery capacity.

Hence, the Porsche Taycan 4S could have had a range of 220 miles (354 km) instead of the current 199 miles (320 km). The same Porsche Taycan 4S with a Performance Battery Plus could have had a range of more than 250 miles (402 km). But that’s not happening.

The Porsche Taycan Is Heavier Than Similar Battery Electric Vehicles

Porsche has always been about control, reliability, and a sense of driving pleasure that many of the other brands don’t really deliver. This comes at a cost, one of which is weight.

Here’s a weight comparison between the various Porsche Taycan and Tesla models:

Porsche TaycanWeightWeightTesla Model
Taycan4,568 lbs (2,072 kg)4,561 lbs (2,069 kg)Model S
Taycan 4S4,773 lbs (2,165 kg)4,766 lbs (2,162 kg)Model S Plaid
Cross Turismo4,894 lbs (2,220 kg)5,000 lbs (2,268 kg)*Model X
4 Cross Turismo5,029 lbs (2,281 kg)5,000 lbs (2,268 kg)*Model X Plaid
4S Cross Turismo5,033 lbs (2,283 kg)3,862 lbs (1,752 kg)Model 3 (RWD)
Taycan GTS5,077 lbs (2,303 kg)4,034 lbs (1,830 kg)Model 3 Long Range
GTS Sport Turismo5,152 lbs (2,337 kg)4,048 lbs (1,836 kg)Model 3 Performance
Taycan Turbo5,119 lbs (2,322 kg)4,208 lbs (1,909 kg)Model Y (RWD)
Turbo Cross Turismo5,196 lbs (2,357 kg)4,363 lbs (1,979 kg)Model Y Long Range
Turbo S5,101 lbs (2,313 kg)4,398 lbs (1,995 kg)Model Y Performance
*The only Tesla models touching the 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) threshold are X and X Plaid which have a maximum tow capacity of their curb weight, so they aren’t comparable to the Porsche Taycan.

All the other Tesla cars are significantly lighter than every Porsche Taycan model. Naturally, all this extra weight reduces the range of a Porsche Taycan.

Porsche Taycans Are Less Efficient Than Comparable Tesla Models

I know the Porsche fans might find this amusing, but Tesla has more efficient electric cars. An internal combustion engine and its drivetrain is a completely different realm than a powertrain with electric motors. Plus, there’s a battery efficiency issue.

Tesla isn’t a car maker. It is a battery company. Obviously, it has greater expertise than Porsche in designing and extracting the most out of its batteries to deliver an impressive range.

Porsche Voluntarily Reports a Lower Range Than the EPA Estimate

Auto enthusiasts and industry watchers report that Porsche voluntarily reduces its range for the Taycan models, and seems unbothered by the estimates.

“…we hope consumers will see that estimated range is just one facet amongst many that they can use to better drive their purchase decision.”

spokesperson Calvin Kim, Porsche

Imagine EPA’s conservative estimate being further reduced by the automaker itself, and you will have a better and easier understanding of why the Porsche Taycan range is so low. No wonder some people have been beating EPA estimates and Porsche’s claimed Taycan range!

CNET’s Editor at Large, Tim Stevens, claims that he “beat the Porsche Taycan’s EPA range, even in winter”. He extracted over 30 miles more than the EPA range of 215 miles for the 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Porsche Taycan Range As Low as the Estimate?

The Porsche Taycan range is a conservative claim, including the EPA’s assessment. You may be able to get up to 20% more range than the official estimate with proper battery management.

Is the Porsche Taycan Range the Lowest for EVs?

The Porsche Taycan range is the lowest for EVs if you compare it with Tesla, Lucid, and similar brands. But some entry-level and mid-range electric cars of other manufacturers have shorter ranges.
